For many students, arriving at University each year is the first time they will have lived away from home, away from the rules and restrictions of the family unit. For some, freedom is an exciting prospect, one they readily welcome. For others it is a terrifying, unknown quantity. However, for all it is a new, and in some way exciting experience.
Moving in to halls gives many, for the first time, the chance to make a space their own. For thousands of freshers each year, one little room will play host to countless new experiences, both good and bad. This room is vitally important; it represents their freedom, their personality and however cramped it is, or messy it may become, it is their home for a hugely important year of their lives.
I hope to document the relationship between freshers and the place in which, for one year, they will be eating, drinking, working, having sex, taking drugs, and possibly even sleeping. Each portrait will be a glimpse into the personality, and experiences of one first year student. One young man or woman who, weather they know it or not, is in the midst of one the greatest periods of change and self-discovery, that they are ever likely to experience.
I remember when I thought people in their 20’s were adults. Now all of my friends are in their 20’s and everybody is just kind of fumbling around bumping into each other, trying to figure out where the free food is……
so that’s pretty much what I’m expecting to experience for the next like 10 years.
the accuracy of this post is alarming.
